Chapter 01

1526 First Enslaved Africans in North America

Enslaved Africans are brought to the short-lived San Miguel de Gualdape settlement on the coast of present-day South Carolina — the earliest recorded arrival on the North American mainland.

Chapter 02

1619 Arrival at Point Comfort

The first documented enslaved Africans in the English colonies arrive at Point Comfort in Virginia, beginning a chapter carried by faith and endurance.

Chapter 03

1776 A Nation Declares

All men are created equal' is written — a promise not yet extended to all, but a promise nonetheless remembered.

Chapter 04

1863 Emancipation Proclamation

President Lincoln declares those enslaved in rebelling states to be free — a legal beginning of a longer becoming.

Chapter 05

1865 Juneteenth

Word of freedom reaches Galveston, Texas. A day of remembrance is born and carried forward through generations.

Chapter 06

1868 The 14th Amendment

Citizenship is guaranteed to all persons born or naturalized in the United States.

Chapter 07

1964 Civil Rights Act

A landmark law forbids discrimination — the covenant of belonging is rewritten in national voice.

Chapter 08

1965 Voting Rights Act

Barriers to the ballot fall. The full weight of American citizenship draws closer.

Chapter 09

2026 KNEW GLORY

A symbol raised beside Old Glory — remembering the whole journey, and inviting every American into the fuller story.
